Meet Pera

Her name, meaning “strong” and “solid,” was given to her during her time on the streets — a symbol of her resilience.

Pera’s story begins on the streets of Turkey, where a brutal new law passed last year has opened the door to mass abuse and killing of stray animals. Every day, I see heartbreaking footage of cruelty toward dogs in my home country — and it’s been tearing me apart.

Then I saw her.

This tiny, love-filled girl was born on the streets, chasing after anyone who passed by with hopeful, glowing eyes — eyes that just wanted to be seen and loved. Her only toy was trash she found on the ground, and her bed was a piece of cardboard. The second I saw her, I couldn’t stop crying. I knew I had to do something.

She was following people with joy in her step and light in her eyes, but I knew that if I didn’t help, that light would be taken from her. I reached out to the volunteer who had posted the video, and luckily, she had also been trying to find a way to save Pera.

We acted quickly. Someone had just called animal control on Pera, which meant she was about to be picked up — and likely killed. We stepped in just in time to place her in a safe pet hotel.

Since then, Pera has been living in a clean, loving pet hotel while waiting for her journey to the U.S. I’ve worked closely with my veterinarian friend to make sure she’s fully vaccinated, tested, and healthy. She’s doing great.

Unfortunately, she hasn’t been spayed yet. Since she’s in a pet hotel and proper post-surgery care is essential, we didn’t want to risk complications.

Pera’s Personality:

She’s incredibly sweet, calm, and gentle. She gets along very well with people and other dogs. She hasn’t met cats yet, but she’s highly trainable and very intelligent.

She has a playful side but is also a bit of a lazy girl — she absolutely loves to nap. She’s the kind of dog who will look into your eyes with so much love, simply grateful for a warm bed, fresh water, and a full belly.

There are no behavior issues — no aggression, guarding, or dominance. She’s truly an angel.

Pera is expected to arrive in the U.S. by the end of August or early September, and she’ll be ready to meet the family she’s been waiting for her whole life.

These dogs are waiting to be loved . . . to be cherished , , ,
to be WANTED.

Each of the dogs our Turkey rescuers help is looking for a forever home – could you be the loving family they long for?

Adopting a dog from Turkey is easier than you might think.

Adoptable Turkish dogs can be flown to America, or, if you’d enjoy the opportunity to visit the beautiful country of Turkey, you can bring up to two dogs back with you. We’re happy to advise you on either adoption method.

If you’d like to know more, contact us for details.

Before traveling, rescuers in Turkey prepare each dog for their journey. The dogs practice resting in kennels, just as they will do on a flight, and each dog  gets their very own passport and rabies vaccination certificate.

These sweet, gentle dogs simply want a family who will love them unconditionally, lumps and all. Many of the dogs in need are Golden Retrievers, a breed known for their gentleness and joy.
